Per i lavori stagionali serviva tanta manodopera e i “caporali” giravano per le campagne e per i paesi di montagna soprattutto del Lazio, ma anche di Marche, Abruzzo, e reclutavano le donne. Nelle zone dell’interno non c'era lavoro e quindi molte ragazze erano contente di poter aiutare i magri bilanci familiari, anche se molte famiglie non volevano che andassero a lavorare lontano da casa.
